How to Find a Reliable Chicken Supplier for a New Restaurant in Ontario

Your chicken supplier relationship will affect your kitchen every service, every day you’re open. Getting it right at the start — before bad habits and workarounds become entrenched — is worth the time it takes.

Start with Certification

Before tasting anything or discussing any price, ask every potential supplier for their HACCP certification documentation and halal certification if it applies to your menu. A supplier who can’t produce these documents immediately is not a supplier to build your kitchen around. D&D Poultry has been HACCP-certified since 2006 and will provide full documentation at the first conversation.

Request Samples, Not Just Promises

Ask every potential supplier for samples of the specific products you’ll order. Cook them in your kitchen using your equipment and your preparation method. Pay attention to marinade penetration, portion consistency, cook yield, and how the product holds if it needs to rest before service. The product that looks good on a spec sheet needs to perform consistently under your actual cooking conditions.

Ask About Minimum Orders and Flexibility

New restaurants typically don’t have the volume to meet large minimum order requirements. Ask potential suppliers what their minimums are and whether those minimums are flexible for new accounts building their volume. A supplier who wants your business long-term will work with you at the start.

Understand the Delivery Relationship

Delivery schedule, minimum lead time, and what happens when you need a last-minute order are all worth discussing before you commit. A supplier with clear, reliable delivery protocols reduces your kitchen’s operational risk significantly.
