Omega-3 Free-Run Chicken: What It Is and Why It’s Worth It

The phrase Omega-3 chicken gets used loosely in grocery marketing. Some of it is meaningful. Some of it is not. Here’s what it actually means, how D&D Poultry’s Omega-3 line is produced, and why it matters if you care about what you’re eating.

What Omega-3 Chicken Actually Means

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients — your body can’t produce them on its own and has to get them from food. Most conventionally raised chicken is relatively low in Omega-3 because the birds are fed corn-based diets that don’t contain significant Omega-3 sources.

Omega-3 chicken is raised differently. The birds are fed a diet that includes natural Omega-3 sources — in our case, flaxseed — which means the Omega-3 content of the meat itself is significantly higher. The Omega-3 is ingested through the bird’s diet, not injected after the fact. That distinction matters.

Where Our Omega-3 Chicken Comes From

D&D Poultry’s Omega-3 line comes from Country Poultry Processing in Ontario — a farm run by fifth-generation Mennonite farmers whose practices reflect both deep agricultural tradition and genuine care for the animals they raise. The chickens are free-run — never caged. They’re fed a natural mix of corn, barley, and flaxseed. The slaughter facility is on the farm’s premises, which minimizes transportation stress on the birds and reduces the environmental footprint of the operation.

The Dikeos family has known this farm for years. The farmers know our family by name. This is as close to farm-to-fork as Ontario chicken gets.

Free-Run vs. Free-Range: The Difference

Free-run means the birds are not confined to cages and move freely within a barn environment. Free-range means they have access to outdoor space. Our Omega-3 line is free-run — uncaged, humanely raised, with the diet and handling that matter most for the quality of the meat.
